Be Anything You Want To Be?

I guess in some ways I belabor this point of blank slate (that people can learn anything and behave in anyway they choose), but to me it’s woven its way into the fabric of our leadership and our society. Unfortunately, we are going to suffer greatly as a result. Both as individuals and as a collective.

Let me explain.

Because we place emphasis on learning and our ability to learn, we are losing sight of alignment, synergy and productivity.

I was listening to one of my Trend Reports this morning on the way to town and they were talking about how over the past 30 years that education has focused on self-esteem issues rather than on performance. Research is now telling us we are paying a huge price for this over-indulgence in blank slate—that if people have high self-esteem that they will perform better. Research is flat showing this is a flawed set of assumptions.

From time to time, I run across paradigm shifts that present opportunities…such great shifts that if not examined at the flood, lead on to lost opportunities.

One such shift is occurring for those of us that like working in our pajamas and jogging suits and it has to do with email marketing. Without question, the barrage of information, and everything from a to z, including blogs to zaps are clamoring for attention and adding to the overall malaise of email.

Yet, I like you have to go through our snail mail everyday, even if it’s to dump 99% in the trash bin.

Once someone dumps you in the “unsubscribe” on email—you’re gone…and that’s happening with each and every misstep you take in your email marketing. There isn’t an person who has used email to market that isn’t seeing declines in conversion rates.

Someone once said, “do you know how to get a mailing list of 100,000 on email?" and an answer is, "start with 500,000!"

From April 12 until April 30, 2005, I plan to spend an intensive 3 weeks working with a small group of people as I make the shift myself to the new wave of direct mail marketing.

Do I plan to become a direct marketer?

No, not anymore than I plan to become a blogger, a newsletter writer, a trainer, a coach or consultant.

This 3-week period is a “wetware upgrade” that has to come along every once in a while when a paradigm shifts or you get left behind…or what’s worse, tossed from your path of purpose.

It’s three weeks to sharpen the saw with the people, things, and technology I need to make the leap from marketing 1.0 to 2.0.

In some ways, my life has NEVER been better!

I do what I want most of the time and make a contribution, what more could I ask?

Essentially I want it to stay that way; that’s why I’m offering you an opportunity to work up close with me as I learn what I need to learn to make the shift to the new paradigm and ride the new wave of prosperity (in all modes) that is waiting for each person on their own path. By watching me learn, you’ll be exposed to everything I do now, understanding what works, what doesn’t, but more than that, what we have to do to change and adapt to the new conditions we all face.

We’ll be working 3 times a week for 21 days for about an hour at a time with special sessions on Saturday mornings in the Eastern Time Zone for those who want extra work and help.

My own personal goals are simple:

1. Identify the new wave principles of direct marketing.
2. Implement the tools necessary to accomplish this online and asynchronously.
3. Move away from Direct Marketing 1.0 that depends on synchronous work for me and my staff.
4. Get my conversion rates into higher levels.
5. Get higher returns with less effort, so I can spend more time doing what I love to do.

If your goals are similar, or you’re ready to make the leap, come join me. The group will be limited so we get enough air time to discuss the issues. You’ll need to have internet access during the class, or if you’re listening to the audio, you can review the sessions. However, these sessions won’t be available to the public as this is for the most part proprietary material and will not be widely distributed.

These sessions will be fast and furious, you’ll need to come prepared to learn and learn fast, but what you’ll get in return is more than 30 years of marketing experience synthesized quickly. I’ll show you the actions I am taking and the ones I’m going to take to move to the next level…just listening in with a notepad is going to be reward enough for most people, but actually implementing a system as I’m going to do in those 3 weeks will pay enormous returns in my opinion.

I can’t guarantee you success, but I’ll guarantee you that you’ll learn a lot and perhaps get yourself unstuck from between the rock and hard place you’ve found yourself in.

The sessions will be at 1:30 PM Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday Eastern time for about one hour for three weeks. You’ll get approximately 9 hours of exposure over a period of 3 weeks to the materials that I’ll bring in from a variety of sources and we’ll literally work on this together. I’ll walk you through everything I’m doing as I do it and you can learn from my successes and failures.

Leadership & Lines of Evolution

During the past year, I’ve been studying a process called TRIZ.

What is TRIZ? TRIZ (pronounced TREEZ) is the Russian acronym for the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. It is a proven algorithmic approach to solving system problems. It began in 1946 when the Russian engineer and scientist Genrich Altshuller discovered that the evolution of a system is not a random process, but is governed by certain objective laws. These laws can be used to consciously develop a system along its path of evolution — by determining and implementing innovations. [Source: http://www.aitriz.org/ ]

If you haven’t been exposed to this process, do whatever you have to do to expose yourself as soon as possible. Ok, with those attributions out of the way, let me say something about how the line of evolution, which is a TRIZ mainstay, applies to leadership.

I often call this process, orders of consequence, where a what if question or two, or the benefit chain is used to identify what comes next. In TRIZ, you can use the line of evolution process to create alignment by de-layering ideality…another TRIZ mainstay.

The reason that I’m writing about this concept relates to the concept of how leadership evolves over time. Usually this evolution is reactive to emerging conditions and is problem-oriented. What I’m suggesting to you here is that you begin to see leadership and evolution as a co-generative system. In other words, we can “affect” the future through leadership evolution.

Let me offer an example:

Think about leadership, say in an organization of 100 people. The somewhat normal or accepted process is to develop a strategic plan through any number of well-known strategic processes and to execute the strategy efficiently. (Let’s keep it simple for the teachable point of view I’m offering.) What I don’t see often is a line of evolution being used to enhance ideality, or the future desired state, except through one iteration.

Using the lines of evolution process, or what I often refer to as a developmental path, we engage the future through an iterative process and ask: “what happens next?” Or, “based on what we know now, how is the "what" going to evolve in the next iteration.

Back to the example:

Let’s say that the strategy says we’re going to develop 25% new products based on attractive quality creation (I’ll write about this soon), which is just customer focused product and service development. That sounds pretty good to everyone and it came from a lot of discussions around relying too much on current offerings, getting left behind in the competitive market, etc. etc.—all good strategy stuff.

Now, here’s what I’m asking you to do:

Ask the people in the organization to tell you what is the next iteration after this effort is placed in execution. What if you succeed, what if you don’t succeed? What is the next likely thing to occur…in the business, in the industry, in the world, as a result of this success or failure? As you look towards “why” you’re doing this, does "what next" take you there? Let me say that again…does what you do and how you do it, take you to the why?

In some cases, I’ll bet a dime to a donut that it takes you away from the present why.

The question then becomes, if the likely or probable lines of evolution take you away from the present why, then is the current “why” the why that needs to evolve? When you answer these questions, you’re going to have a different perspective on your leadership.

Using lines of evolution or a developmental path process creates insights and feedback on our leadership strategy and execution. While it seems silly to say that in a complex, emergent, and self-organizing world that we can impact proactively the lines of evolution in our organization, that’s exactly what I’m saying.

Most of leadership practiced today is reactive or retroactive. Lines of evolution are short and not often explored among the leadership constituency—which if you caught my drift above—involving everyone as a leader in the organization, at some level.

The Teachable Point of View:

Using dialogue, create a feed-forward system based on feedback on strategy and execution lines of evolution as viewed from all levels of the organization. Learn to ask, "what’s next", and if that’s next, what comes from that—asking yourself—as a result, am I closer to the “why” I’ve chosen…or do lines of evolution choose the “why?”

Once we know whether we’re adapting or reacting, the allocation of resources to increase higher probabilities of ROI (Return on Investment) becomes proactive, rather than reactive. It also creates a path, or line of sight that is in most cases, more efficient, effective and sustainable over time. These three elements are essential to creating confidence and support from the stakeholders.
